Sir Bobby launched his Foundation in 2008 after a request for help from his oncologist Professor Ruth Plummer. Professor Plummer was treating Sir Bobby as he faced cancer for the fifth – and what he knew would be the final time. She needed to raise £500,000 to equip a new cancer drug trials centre at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care in Newcastle upon Tyne and asked him if he knew anyone who might like to donate. Sir Bobby responded by launching a charity to get the money she needed. He described it as “like being at the helm of a team again.” What he called his last and greatest team.
The Foundation funds projects within the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that directly benefit cancer patients from across north east England and Cumbria – and which also contribute significantly to international research into the disease.
In 2018 we were proud to support the Foundation via a donation to Ticketyboo's charity event which raised £2270 for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
The RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour rescue service in the UK and Ireland, and their seasonal lifeguards look after people on busy beaches including our local beach at Cullercoats.
RNLI crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,200 lives since 1824 and their Community Safety teams explain the risks and share safety knowledge with anyone going out to sea or to the coast.
As in 2017 we were honoured to work with local businesses and the RNLI to sponsor their nine hole mini golf during their fabulous Harbour Day. A great family fun day that we're already looking forward to in 2019.
