December 15, 2021 3 min read

Saltburn-by-the-Sea, commonly referred to as Saltburn, is a seaside town that lies within the historic boundaries of the North Riding of Yorkshire. This delightful coastal town bestows plenty of Victorian charm and thrills. There’s plenty to entertain in Saltburn so if you’re planning a trip, we’ve got you covered with all the best spots to hit!

Things to do

Paddle Boarding with SUP Adventures

Calling all watersport adventurers, go paddle boarding with SUP Adventures! With venues across the North York Moors National Park Area (Whitby, Sandsend, Saltburn etc), they offer professional tuition and are an accredited school (Academy of Surf Instructors). Theyprovide fun and safe opportunities to exercise and explore the great outdoors. With their brilliant local knowledge and array of positive reviews it’s easy to tell how fun, easy and accessible this activity is. They do a range of lessons from yoga, beginner lessons, paddle fitness and improver sessions. The perfect activity to join if you are on holiday or simply keen to try out this fast growing activity!

Walk along the pier

The seaside piers around the coast of Britain stand as a powerful reminder of the achievements of Victorian engineers and entrepreneurs. There are currently less than 54 pleasure piers in existence around the UK coastline. Saltburn's Victorian pier was the first iron pier to be built on the North East Coast, is the most northerly surviving British Pier and the only remaining pleasure pier on the North East coast. Built in an exposed position and facing due north into the cruel and unforgiving North Sea, the history of Saltburn Pier tells a tale of survival against the elements.

Saltburn beach

Saltburn is a seaside resort with a rich heritage dating back to the Victorian heyday and beyond. Saltburn is home to one of the best surf spots along this stretch of North Sea coast, Saltburn beach! Facing directly north it picks up more swell than neighbouring spots. It is also protected from the wind by the imposing headland of Huntcliff at the eastern end. Apart from that, it really is a stunning stretch of golden sands and a must-visit when in town.

Go fishing at Lockwood Beck

For any fishing enthusiasts, Lockwood Beck is a coarse fishery offering peace, quiet, stunning scenery and excellent stocks of perch and roach in the 60 acres of clear water. With plenty of fishing opportunities, it is a must if you’re looking to catch something on your visit.

Places to eat/drink

The Badger Hounds

If you’re looking for a hearty, home-cooked meal then The Badger Hounds is the place to go! A classic northern pub with delicious food, they have a burning log fire inside which brings a warm and friendly atmosphere (however, if you’re feeling brave, there are outside tables). They also welcome dogs into the bar area, but the restaurant is strictly pet free. They also offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options for anyone with special dietary requirements.

Virgo’s Bistro

Virgo’s Bistro is a wonderful little café and has been described as a ‘hidden gem’ and I can definitely see why - offering a wide variety menu from a hearty English breakfast to tea and cake, it’s perfect for grabbing a light-bite or a full evening meal all for a very affordable price. And if that doesn’t sell you on it, the cute decor might!

Where to stay

The Spa Hotel

If relaxation is your first priority then look no further, this family-run Spa Hotel is an imposing sight, boasting unrivaled panoramic views of Huntcliff, the North Sea, and the beautiful surrounding countryside. They welcome families, couples, surfers, dog walkers, you name it…everyone can expect a comfortable stay and enjoy the comforts of their spacious rooms (many of which have stunning sea views). Located in North Yorkshire our enchanting coastal town Saltburn-by-the-sea bestows plenty of Victorian charm and thrills.

How to get there

You can get to Saltburn via bus or train - there are a number of routes that have stops nearby. Either take the Northern Rail or buses 18, X3 or X4. Or if travelling by car coming from the North, take the A19.

We'll all never forget that feeling in March 2020 where it felt that the world was closing in around us.

In the mix of the worries about a global pandemic we had absolutely no idea if our business that we loved so much, and put our hearts and souls, into would survive. It was such a worrying feeling and at this stage we really had no plan.

Then out of the blue one of our amazing customers got in touch with us, concerned about the survival of small indie businesses they suggested that we produced a print in the vein of the WW2 "Keep Calm and Carry On" ethos but with a Whitley Bay angle...
