We're proud of our artists here in the North East and have a gallery wall in our Whitley Bay shop which hosts a range of solo exhibitions for 6-8 weeks at a time. We've enjoyed working with a range of established artists and hosting some people's very first solo exhibition to bring you the very best of North East art.
Our current exhibition features the unique work of Laura Edgar. Based in Whitley Bay, Laura is an artist in textiles and mixed media, specialising in fabric manipulation and embroidery techniques. Laura is inspired by the movement of a textile, it's texture and sculptural qualities. She describes her process as ‘painting and drawing’ with textiles and thread.
The local North East region’s dramatic nature, our land and seascapes, are Laura’s main source of inspiration. Her scenic work depicts an exploration of the ephemeral changes to colour, texture and light that occur with the elements and at different times of day.
Inspired by the nostalgia of the discarded items of clothing and vintage textiles she uses, Laura explores an eclectic mix of vintage textiles, recycled clothing, paint, dyes, paper ephemera and haberdashery. Laura records initial inspiration with photography and sketches and allows the manipulation of her chosen medium and a spontaneous experimental approach to develop the finished piece.
