Enjoying Spring in the North East
Enjoying Spring in the North East
The days are longer, the flowers bursting open, the blossom starting and the birds in beautiful song. Spring is here!
After a long winter, it’s the time when we want to spread our wings and really get out into the fresh air. Here’s just some of the places in the region to enjoy the season that is Spring.
Warkworth Castle & Hermitage
One of our favourite sights of Spring is the dazzling display of daffodils of the bank surrounding Warkworth Castle. It’s always the signifier that Spring has arrived. Explore this fabulous Medieval castle and grounds and in the Easter and May holiday’s there are always plenty of activities for all the family to enjoy.
Walk down into Warkworth Village and have a bite to eat,

Howick Hall Garden and Arboretum
It’s always a joy to visit the former home of Earl Grey throughout the year and Spring is no exception. From daffodils to tulips, the grounds are a carpet of colours that put a smile on your face. There are lovely woodland walks to enjoy and even on a busy day you will always find a quiet spot.
After all that fresh air, enjoy a pot of tea and a slice of cake in the gorgeous tea rooms.

Cherry Blossoms at Alnwick Garden
One of the things that makes Spring such a special season is how fleeting some things can be, giving us beauty for just a short time but the memory can last forever. At Alnwick Garden towards the end of April and into early May you can enjoy the sight of over three Japanese Cherry trees, known as Taihaku in full blossom. We are so privileged to have this beautiful experience right here in the North East.
Keep an eye on the Alnwick Garden’s website for updates on when to view the blossom.

Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve
Spring sees the return of many of our feathered friends to the British Isles. At Rainton Meadows just outside Houghton Le Spring you can really immerse yourself in a spot of birdwatching. Home to two hundred species of birds and to Durham’s Wildlife Trust. Make some sandwiches, fill a flask and enjoy a mindful morning or afternoon observing life in the reserve.

Ouseburn Farm
You can enjoy Spring life in the city too. The fabulous Ouseburn farm just a stone’s throw from Newcastle City Centre has its own Farmers Club and you can even have a go at feeding the lambs. Take a stroll around the Ouseburn Valley and see what Spring sights you can spot.
The Valley itself is a great urban birdwatching spot from Kingfishers, Grey Wagtails and it’s Mute Swans.

These are just a few suggestions, you’ll be sure to have your own but one thing is for sure, Spring in the North East is something really special.
