Our Guide to Amble
Our guide to Amble
We always enjoy a visit to the harbour town of Amble. I think we’re just always drawn to places by the sea.
Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre
Our first place to pay a visit is before you reach Amble itself. Hauxley has featured in our guides before and that’s because we love it. It obviously offers the fantastic opportunity to observe a vast array of bird and other wildlife species and there’s always something to spot at any time of the year It’s bird hides across the site really offer a space of tranquillity to observe the many species who love and visit the nature reserve. Make sure you take a look around it’s visitor centre and it’s café stocks some amazing tasty treats. Just the ticket when having a day out.
You can walk out onto Druridge Bay from the car park and what a spectacular stretch of beach it is.
Amble Harbour
Since I was a boy, walking around Amble Harbour was always a treat. The fishing industry might sadly not be what it was but you can still see a few boats in the harbour and imagine them out at sea in all weathers. The harbour is still hosts a market every Sunday where you can anything from fresh seafood to handmade crafts.
There’s some great places to eat along the harbour and the Fish Shack is one of our favourites.
Amble Harbour Village Pods
We love a small indie business and the harbour is home to fifteen of them. Housed in their own individual wooden pods, it’s great to just talk your time visiting each one of them. It’s such a great location for them and offering something really different.
The High Street
It’s always worth walking into Amble’s town centre and having a tootle up and down it’s high street. Lucy’s Dad always pops into the Amble Butcher for a visit. It’s genuinely become a bit of an institution in the town. It really is lovely to see a high street that contains such fab small indie businesses.
Another institution of the High Street is the Coquet Tea Rooms where you can now enjoy afternoon tea in their upstairs space
Puffin Cruise to Coquet Island
About a mile off Amble is Coquet Island. Home to around 40,000 nesting seabirds such as Puffins, Arctic Terns and Kittiwakes. There’s also a colony of seals which call the island their home all year round.
Dave Gray Puffin Cruises have been going for over fifty years so certainly know what they are doing.
This is just a selection of what you can enjoy on a visit to Amble and of course, just a stone’s throw away is the village of Warkworth and you can see it’s historic castle from the harbour.
