Melanie Kyles (born 1990, Newcastle upon Tyne, lives in Gateshead) takes what are usually regarded as gender-specific materials, such as fabrics and crystal to subvert notions of economy and practicality traditionally associated with the ‘decorative’ arts. Her creative practice explores themes of feminism, craftsmanship, heritage and politics, often blurs the boundaries between art and fashion, and has a focus on creative events and education with her workspace Slow Hand Creative Studio.
